Using Trans Sacral L5/S1 Fusion For Relief From Back Pain

Trans-sacral L5/SI fusion is a spinal surgery targeted at the L5/SI intervertebral space where the surgeon implants an implant to treat painful symptoms caused by vertebral instability like spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis or degenerative discs.

It is basically through a small, para-coccygeal incision that the surgeon makes to create a pre-sacral corridor. This corridor provides access to the anterior lumbosacral body, and the L5/SI intervertebral space. The main advantage of using this spinal surgery to treat degenerative discs is that it does not invade adjacent structures and has no form of annular disruption.

Once access to the L5/SI vertebral bodies is provided, the surgeon has no problem inserting bone graft material into the disc space. If required, the surgeon may also implant an anterior fixation rod at the spot using the same track.

Trans-sacral L5/S1 fusion however cannot be used to treat cases of severe scoliosis or spondylolisthesis and any form of tumor or any trauma. This is because the surgery is limited to the anterior supplemental fixation of the lumber spine at L5/S1 which is possible with the help of marked facet and pedicle screw systems.

Risks

The risks of this spinal surgery is similar to most spinal surgeries like bleeding, damage to soft tissue, neurological damage, infections, spinal cord impingement, loss of bowel or bladder function, pain, meningitis or loss of erectile or ejaculatory function.

In addition to this, there is a chance of the implant breaking, loosening, getting expulted or undergoing bursitis or the fracture of osseous structures. This is why surgeons consider using trans-sacral L5/S1 fusion for treating back pain only when other spine surgery options prove futile.
